Founding the Program
The WTYC formed in 1996 as a touring choir began
with Martha Wright's desire to give children an outlet to develop their musical talents.
Two years later, a training choir, the West Tennessee Children's Chorus was added as a
training choir. The WTCC/WTYC is an auditioned group of young musicians, ages 7-15 from
various school districts in the Memphis area; they rehearse twice weekly in Cordova
Tennessee.
Music Students are Better Students
Recent studies bear out the academic and aesthetic
benefits of children learning to read music--that musicians rank higher in math, reading,
and language courses and on college entrance exams than their peers, have better
attendance rates in school, and possess a heightened ability to organize thoughts and
improvise.
Instruction
The WTCC/WTYC emphasis for instruction is on
teaching foundational music skills using six areas of focus--vocal technique for the
age level, sight-singing using solfa syllables, (do, re, mi, etc.) ear-training,
part-singing, service, and performance. With the WTCC/WTYC motto "building strong
voices for tomorrow," the WTCC/WTYC has become recognized as a program of
excellence for developing children in character, discipline, and musicianship.
Performances & Service Projects
2007 Fall Semester
Holiday and spring Concert dates will be announced Dec 14.
Service Projects and Performances are held each semester.
Sound of Angels
The pure, three and four-part harmony, treble sound
the WTCC/WTYC produces is often compared to being "what angels must sound like."
In addition to the instruction and performances the WTYC has been involved in,
participants are also actively fund-raising for their upcoming performance tours.
An Auditioned Group
No previous music instruction is necessary to
audition for the WTCC/WTYC but students must have displayed a desire and discipline to
excel and enjoy associations with other youth who are serious about receiving quality
music instruction. For audition or performance information about the WTCC/WTYC, you may
call Martha Wright at 901-753-3918, orsend an email now.
